Priorities as Mayor

Mayor Singer has expanded support for public schools by making improved and stronger schools a city priority. He came up with the plan to partner with the school district to build a new public school on city land, adding the city’s first new school in more than a decade. The new Blue Lake Elementary School adds nearly 1,200 student seats and enabled two vital school rebuilding projects to be completed on schedule. Singer also initiated the city’s partnership with a non-profit for mental health counseling for Boca high school students, the first municipal partnership of this type in South Florida. Scott has also voted for greater funding for Boca Police to support and augment the safety efforts of the school district.

Mayor Singer cares deeply about enhancing the quality of life for Boca Raton residents. Scott started and led the city’s successful effort to obtain a Brightline high-speed rail station in Downtown, which will improve mobility and connect Boca to a major transportation network. The expanded economic development initiatives he has championed have helped bring thousands of high-paying jobs to Boca Raton. He held a Waterfront Visioning Session in partnership with residents and local architects that provided the framework for the new Wildflower Park along the Intracoastal Waterway.

Singer has worked to increase transparency and accessibility of city government, through reductions of red tape and use of technology for access to permits and key information. Scott sponsored three sets of ethics reforms that set stronger requirements concerning ethics inquires and to safeguard against potential conflicts of interest. Scott has held a series of regular town hall meetings since his first year as a council member, which has enabled thousands of residents to communicate with him directly.

Mayor Singer set a priority to strengthen standards for review of the safety of buildings in the wake of the tragic building collapse in Surfside, and Boca Raton became the first city in the state to adopt a more stringent building recertification process. In addition, Scott has worked to achieve better designed buildings by raising standards for new development. His calls for more meaningful open space were instrumental in changing a 13-year policy that now ensures more open space for downtown projects. Applicants have responded, with recent approvals providing millions of dollars in offsite roadway improvements and dedicated public space, something that did not happen before Mayor Singer’s term. He has voted for new parks and playing fields, more green space, and expanded beaches and water access. Having lived on a barrier island for more than 20 years, Scott is sensitive to the concerns of residents who live east of the Intracoastal.

During the COVID-19 crisis, Singer has worked closely with city staff and mayors and officials in nearby cities to strengthen and coordinate Boca’s response through greater communication and collaboration. In these trying times, Scott initiated a non-profit effort to link volunteers and residents needing aid, and voted for direct support to residents, businesses, and non-profits.
